The Ontario Fertility Program (OFP) is a government-funded initiative designed to make fertility care more accessible for people living in Ontario.
Through OFP, eligible residents with a valid Ontario health card (OHIP) can receive provincially funded fertility treatments at participating clinics including CReATe Fertility Centre.
What Is OFP?
This funding is part of the Ontario Ministry of Health’s effort to reduce financial barriers and support families in their fertility journeys. Eligibility is not based on income, sexual orientation, gender, or family status.
To access OFP funding, patients must:
- Be an Ontario resident with a valid OHIP card
- Meet age and treatment-specific requirements
- Attend a participating fertility clinic, like ours
Age limits apply for IVF funding:
- You must be under 43 years of age at the time of treatment to qualify for a funded IVF cycle.
What Is Covered Under OFP?
OFP provides funding for:
- One IVF cycle per eligible patient per lifetime
- Cycle monitoring (bloodwork and ultrasounds)
- Egg retrieval
- Fertilisation (including ICSI when medically indicated)
- Embryo culture
- Freezing of embryos created during the funded cycle
- All subsequent single embryo transfers from that cycle (fresh and frozen)
Funding includes the transfer of one embryo at a time to prioritise safety.
Surrogacy
An additional funded IVF cycle may be available if you are acting as a gestational surrogate.
OFP provides funding for:
- Cycle monitoring
- The insemination procedure
There is no lifetime limit on the number of funded IUI cycles.
Patients requiring fertility preservation due to medical treatment (such as chemotherapy) may qualify for funding for:
- Monitoring
- Egg or sperm retrieval
- Freezing of one batch or sample
Eligibility requires physician assessment and OHIP coverage.
What Is Not Covered Under OFP?
While the Ontario Fertility Program covers the clinical portion of treatment, some costs remain the patient’s responsibility.
These typically include:
- Fertility medications
- Sperm preparation (“sperm wash”) for IUI
- Genetic testing (e.g., PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR)
- Donor sperm or donor egg purchase
- Embryo, egg or sperm storage fees
- Psychological counselling services
We believe in full transparency, before starting treatment, we will provide a detailed breakdown of any anticipated out-of-pocket costs.
