A gestational
carrier is a woman who carries a child that is not biologically
related to herself. She acts as the 'host womb', carrying a child
biologically related to at least one of the intended parents, conceived
through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with the intended parents egg
and sperm or a donor. In some cases conception is achieved with
a donor embryos or donor egg and sperm.
Many
families choose to work with a gestational carrier because it gives
them an option of having their own biological child and permits
the intended parents to be involved with the carrier throughout
the entire pregnancy without the legal concern that the carrier
may "parent" the child.
Being
a gestational carrier appeals to many women who have an easy time
with pregnancies and have a desire to help someone else enjoy the
blessing of parenthood. Being a carrier requires you to be committed
to follow the medical protocol for an IVF transfer, along with following
good prenatal care once a pregnancy is achieved. Most carriers are
stay at home moms who find this a rewarding way to help another
family have a pregnancy which otherwise could not happen.
